Electric
Garden Tools – A Great
Way to Care for the
Environment
By Dan Fenstemaker,

INTELETOOL
People want to do as
much as they can to care
for the environment, and
garden enthusiasts are
among the most
environmentally
conscious of all.
Purists love to use
non-motorized tools, but
those who want the power
and speed of power tools
are turning, more and
more, to electric garden
tools. In this article,
we will cover the basic
advantages of electric
garden tools. If you
haven’t bought electric
tools lately, you may be
surprised how far
they’ve come.
Electric Motor Design
Recent advances in
electric motor deigns,
and the materials used
in these motors, have
led to higher motor
efficiencies. Newer
electric motor designs
tend to run cooler, so
they result in a longer
life. Interestingly,
with technological
advances, newer electric
motors have higher horse
power ratings, yet are
significantly more
efficient than older
designs of years past.
Battery Technology
As most of us know,
rechargeable batteries
have come a long way in
the past 20 years. Most
rechargeable batteries
can now be used several
hundred times, and
recharging times are
faster with charges
lasting significantly
longer than older
designs.
The environmental impact
of electric motor use is
far less than that of
gas-powered motors, and
though this doesn’t
apply to electric garden
tools, using
rechargeable batteries
instead of single-use
alkaline batteries in
your other tools and
toys makes great sense,
because the amount of
energy it takes to
recharge a NiMH battery
is far less than the
energy used to produce a
new one.
Safer and Quieter
Using cordless electric
garden tools can also be
safer than gas powered
units. Gas-powered
motors can be more
unpredictable with
ignition, which can lead
to more accidents. And,
with newer cordless
electric units, you do
not have to drag a power
cord behind throughout
the yard that could
become tangled or
accidentally cut as you
cut.
And, of course, electric
garden tools are so much
quieter than the
ear-shattering noise of
gas-powered tools.
Electric trimmers,
electric blowers, and
especially electric lawn
mowers are many times
quieter than their
gas-powered equivalents.
So, if you are in the
market for new power
garden tools, look
closely at electric
technology. In the long
run, you will probably
save money and you will
definitely be more
friendly to our
environment.
